I am not sure how I found out about the Jolly Holly Jog but I am glad I did. Organised by Ripon Runners the race is based at Ripon Rugby Club where all runners must register. There is then a short 5 minute walk from race headquarters to the start.

The course heads out across fields onto a short stretch of road before turning onto the trails around Studley Royal Park, returning across the same fields to the finish. The route is tough and undulating with runners rewarded with scenic views across Ripon from the highest point although I failed to notice any of them! Because of the recent heavy rain, conditions underfoot were pretty muddy across the majority of off road sections and trail shoes were definitely required.

This year was chip timed for the first time with the results available later the same day on the website. The goodie bag at the end comprised a small sports bag with either a pair of Hilly running gloves or an Up and Running branded Buff inside – probably the best goodie bag of any race and all for £11.

Overall the event was well organised, well marshalled and good value for money. Four Roundhay Runners ran today and all would recommend giving it a try next year.
