As we (Ann Chivers and Pete Wilkie) were in London for the weekend we decided to take part in the local parkrun which happened to be Wormwood Scrubs. The course comprises 3 very muddy laps of part of Wormwood Scrubs and is run entirely off road, predominantly it seems through bogs. It’s a small but friendly parkrun with 38 runners on the day, a good proportion of whom seemed to be first timers.
Ann utilised her cross country experience to race home in 3rd place. Judging by the amount of mud on Pete it appears that he spent most his time jumping in the puddles, but nonetheless he managed to slide around and finish in 4th place. Both got mentions in the write up of the event (www.parkrun.org.uk/wormwoodscrubs/news/2013/04/13/wormwood-scrubs-parkrun-no-96-13th-april-2013) including the fact that we were representing Roundhay Runners.
In summary it’s a fun course with welcoming people. Our only regret is that we didn’t take any money with us so that we could join in with the post-run tea and flapjack in the Thames Valley Harriers club house. As it’s off road it’s very different to our home course of Roundhay but has the advantage of being almost totally flat.
